Ford Matthew Empathy Belly Posed

You have heard the phrase you have to walk a mile in someone’s shoes before you can understand them. Well, this is a twist with me filling the ‘shoes’ of an expectant mother. Most people fear the belly, but I had to try on Ford’s empathy belly. The Detroit automaker’s pregnancy-simulating apparatus aims to help the non-expectant better understand what to expect when someone else is expecting. Ford’s engineers apply that empathy to making moms-to-be safer and more comfortable behind the wheel.

Ford uses the empathy belly to ensure pregnant drivers are considered during the car design process.  Engineers slip on the suits to learn how range of motion and other things affect expecting mothers. This includes getting in and out, adjusting mirrors, accessing the cargo area and even changing lanes. This awareness helps them rethink how they approach ergonomics to encompass those needs.

The suit consists of several pieces, the largest of which is a vest that fits around the torso with Velcro straps, and comes complete with belly and breasts. It fits over a compression strap that goes around the chest to create the shortness of breath felt by expectant mothers. Once that’s in place, two balls roughly the size of an orange and the weight of a shot put are placed into tight pockets on either side of the stomach to mimic the poking sensation of the fetus’ limbs. Finally, another weight Velcros to your lower back for further pregnancy-approximating discomfort. Ford says the whole package weighs 30 pounds — the average total weight gain for a pregnant woman.

After learning about Ford’s empathy belly,  I was eager to find out what it was like sitting in the driver’s seat during the third trimester for an expecting mother. I wanted to experience the range of vehicles Ford has to offer in their line up. Just because you are pregnant does not mean you are changing cars! The Ford lineup at the Chicago Auto Show had the 3 most different sized vehicles: the Ford Explorer, the Ford F150 and the Ford Mustang. I was ready to experience the challenges behind the wheel with a sizeable baby bump.

The first vehicle was the Ford Explorer. To my surprise it is easy to get in and out of the Explorer. I was extremely comfortable in the driver seat. A pleasant surprise was that I can move the steering wheel closer to the dash instead of moving my seat back to make room for my growing belly. matthew empathy explorer

With the Explorer being an SUV, with a more accommodating ride height, I was imagining the climb up into a truck or the drop into a Mustang. So I glided over to the Ford F150 and the Ford Mustang.

Next, I tried the Ford F150. I had to go there first it is the Chicago Bears F150! Getting into the F150 was the hardest out of the three models. Having to climb up into the truck while holding on and supporting my baby bump made it difficult. Once in the F150, it had plenty of room for me and my baby.

Finally, I was ready to try the smallest and shortest. So we glided over with the empathy belly to the Ford Mustang Convertible. I was right it had similar challenges to the F150 except instead of climbing up I was climbing down. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be because the top was down. I could support myself on the side to help lower me and my belly. But the real problem came when I tried to get out of the car. I was tempted to ask someone for a hand. But since we were in a convertible I could push up from the side of the car to get out. matthew empathy mustang

Aside from being designed with pregnant mamas in mind, the Fords are designed and built with new safety features. These AWESOME safety features are the Co-Pilot 360. They will help you remain safe in a distracting world including when you are expecting! Some of my favorites for the expecting parents are:

  • Lane Keeping Aid: Consists of camera-based technology that applies a steering torque in the direction the driver needs to steer to keep the vehicle in the current lane
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert: Uses rear corner-mounted, side-looking radar that detects other vehicles around the car.  This illuminates an indicator lamp in the rearview mirror. When backing out of a parking space, the same sensors can detect vehicles approaching from the sides that may not be visible to the driver.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: Helps drivers maintain a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front of them. Using a radar module mounted at the front of the vehicle, this measures the gap and closing speed to the vehicle ahead. The system automatically adjusts the speed of the car to help maintain a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front.
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Emergency Breaking: The car will scan the road ahead of you.  If any hazards appear, then you will get an alert.  If you do not take corrective action, then the brakes will automatically apply.

All of this and more can be found inside a Ford.  You can find more information about the Co-Pilot 360 and ergonomic design on their website.  Of course, you may be more interested to test out the comfort for yourself!

New logo revealed for Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World

Disney has just revealed an all-new logo for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and it seems to confirm a whole new look and vibe for the theme park.

The new logo was announced on May 1 in celebration of the theme park’s 30th anniversary. Disney revealed concept art for the upcoming signage for the new logo, which will be displayed on the arch that stands at the entrance to the Animation Courtyard. Take a look at the concept art for the new sign below:

The park, which made its debut as Walt Disney World’s third theme park under the name Disney-MGM Studios in 1989, has been undergoing quite the transformation and seems to be moving more in the direction of theming around Disney’s intellectual properties like “Toy Story” and “Star Wars.” From giving the theme park the new name of Disney’s Hollywood Studios a few years back to the removal of beloved attractions like The Great Movie Ride and The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, you could say that it’s an entirely different park than it was when it first opened 30 years ago. And to go along with all of the changes and new themes and attractions that have opened and will soon open at this park, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has an all-new logo.

The new logo is a nod to the new attractions that have been announced for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Within the word “Hollywood” you can see BB-8 as a reference to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening this August, a modern Mickey Mouse as a nod to the upcoming Mickey &Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction opening in 2020 (replacing The Great Movie Ride, which closed in 2017), and finally Woody as a tip-of-the-hat to Toy Story Land, which opened in 2018 and has since brought even more crowds to this theme park than ever before.

Watch the first teaser for Disney’s live-action Winnie the Pooh movie

In the heartwarming live action adventure Disney’s “Christopher Robin,” the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remembers the loving and playful boy who is still inside.

Now grown up, Christopher Robin is stuck in a job where he is overworked, underpaid and facing an uncertain future. He has a family of his own, but his work has become his life, leaving little time for his wife and daughter. Christopher has all but forgotten his idyllic childhood spent with a simple-minded, honey-loving stuffed bear and his friends. But when he is reunited with Winnie-the-Pooh, now tattered and soiled from years of hugs and play, their friendship is rekindled, reminding Christopher of the endless days of childlike wonder and make believe that defined his youth, when doing nothing was considered the very best something. Following an unfortunate mishap with Christopher Robin’s briefcase, Pooh and the rest of the gang including Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger, step out of the forest and venture into London to return the crucial possessions…because best friends will always be there for you.

Disney’s “Christopher Robin” will be released nationwide August 3, 2018.

Unlike other Japanese automakers, Subaru needed only a few years since it established itself as a company to start selling cars in the United States. Founded in 1953, Subaru crossed the pond to North America in 1968, when Subaru of America was born in Balboa Park, California. That’s an impressive feat and it’s not surprising that the carmaker is celebrating its 50th American anniversary with limited-edition versions for all its cars. Launched at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show the limited edition models are based on a high-level trim and come in an all-new exclusive color with unique badging and exterior and interior accents.

Minnie Mouse will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that Minnie Mouse will be honored with the 2,627th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. PST. The star will be dedicated in the category of Motion Pictures at 6834 Hollywood Boulevard in front of El Capitan Theatre.

“Minnie Mouse is a woman of the ages and her iconic status makes her a great addition to our Walk of Fame!” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “Generations of fans of all ages have been looking forward to her seeing her bright new star.”

In 2018, Minnie Mouse will mark her incredible 90th Anniversary in entertainment, a rare accomplishment in the industry. It is the perfect time for Minnie to be recognized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and join other Disney characters: Donald Duck, Tinker Bell, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, Kermit the Frog, and, of course, Mickey Mouse, who received his star in 1978 in recognition of his 50th Anniversary at that time.

Minnie made her debut in the Disney classic, Steamboat Willie, and she instantly became America’s sweetheart. For decades, Minnie has delighted generations of fans with her fun-loving, independent personality and timeless style. Her ability to embody a sense of both old Hollywood elegance and grace, combined with girl-next-door charm established Minnie as one of the most beloved animated characters around the world.

A renowned veteran with more than 70 films, Minnie Mouse is one of Hollywood’s most prolific stars. Since the late 1920s, she’s had starring roles and has performed in a number of period pieces, costume dramas, and TV shows.

Minnie is also a long-standing fashion icon. She has served as a muse for designers, inspiring new fashion collections, and has appeared in magazines and runway shows in New York, Tokyo, and Paris. Her classic polka dot look has been reimagined by the fashion industry through the decades and continues to drive current trends. From her early pill-box flower hat, which has inspired ladies’ hat trends, to her famous bow and ears, Minnie has been looked to for style inspiration since her inception.

In addition to the glitz and glamour, Minnie is civic-minded and has used her talent and celebrity to support causes that affect countless communities in positive ways. In 2016 and 2017, Minnie was well represented by Disney fans and social media users who participated in #ShareYourEars campaigns that resulted in $4-million in donations benefitting Make-A-Wish.

Culinary Fight Club Closed 2017 With A Bang!

Culinary Fight Club put down another great fight with the Sips and Bits edition!

What can a professional Chef and mixologist whip up with Woodford Reserve Bourbon??

Talk about scrumptious foodie samplings with top notch cocktails. On December 21st I was invited to attend the conclusion of the Culinary Fight Club’s 2017 Competitions!

Culinary Fight Club hosts live cooking competitions. No two events are the same. The teams of cooks race for 45 seconds to choose 15 ingredients from the pantry of food provided by Reinhart Foodservice.

Once the ingredients are collected, each team has 60 minutes to construct a dish that depicts their take on this month’s theme sip and bite. Once the timer hit 60 minutes, the audience members and judges sample and vote on a winning dish.

The most amazing part about Culinary Fight Club is they partnered with the non-profit Fight2Feed, which normally 20% of proceeds are donated but in December 100% of ticket sales are donated. This is an organization that partners with top restaurants and food trucks to provide service and support or hungry friends.

AND THE WINNER IS …….

Congratulations to Chef Stefano Roman of PR Italian Bistro for winning both the tasters’s choice and judges vote with his pork loin and Cinnamon Apple Cocktail.

Here’s the first full trailer for coming out movie Love, Simon

“My name’s Simon, and I’m just like you – except I have one huge-ass secret… Nobody knows I’m gay.”

Becky Albertalli’s 2015 novel Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda is getting a big screen adaptation from Greg Berlanti, the producer behind hit shows Arrow, Riverdale and Flash.

The movie will be retitled Love, Simon for its March 2018 release, and stars Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson in the title role.

In this first trailer we see Simon come to terms with his sexuality, while navigating teen life at high school.

Oh and his friends having to come out to their parents as straight at the end of the trailer hits the nail on the head.

“Everyone deserves a great love story. But for 17-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online,” a synopsis reads.

Greg Berlanti recently teased that the film will have some powerful scenes, with the two romantic leads being guys – something that is rarely seen in a mainstream Hollywood romcom.

“In every other major studio film, it’s always the guy and the girl. And there was something so powerful about it being just a guy imagining himself with this other guy in a film again that was going to be marketed and sold as a mainstream romantic comedy.”

Love, Simon will be in cinemas from 16 March.
